With temperatures rising and daffodils blooming only one thing is clear, spring has finally sprung. The long and cold wait is at last over for the owners who stored their classics over the winter and it is time to bring the old girl back out of hibernation to begin preparations for the season ahead. But before all the cleaning and modifying begins, there is no better way to appreciate a nice spring day than spending quality time with your classic on a long drive. |

This March we are choosing to spend our quality time with the MG TC. Being the first post-war car MG launched in 1945 the TC Midget is a true, rare beauty. With the pre-war MG TA and TB being the basis for the TC, all three models have significant similarities such as the engine, gearbox and axles. The only distinctive changes were made to the body and detailing. The body of the TC was widened by 4 inches and detailing was improved with widescreen flaps and updated electrical equipment with the addition of a bulkhead box containing a large 12 volt battery. Other significant changes were made to the suspension with hydraulic lever arm dampers and road slings mounted in shackles allowing for a smoother, quieter ride. Of course the MG TC was now offered with a centre-laced wire wheel instead of the previous outer-laced design. |

Being so similar to the TA and TB models, the TC was already old before its time. But this didn't stop people from falling in love with the sprightly model. Born five weeks after the official end of the war the MG TC bought style and speed to post-war Britain, although only 3,000 were sold in the UK. It also sparked a contagious love affair with Australia, South Africa and most of all America. The importation of the TC was the start of MG’s American adventure and the MG TD model that followed sold even better with 80% of all MGs going to the States. |

In the mid 1950’s a new generation of modern British sports cars were cashing in on MG’s success in America. Brands such as Jaguar, Austin Healey and Triumph were producing more streamlined, faster and better handling cars and in April 1955 the last T type rolled off the production line to a dissatisfied crowd. However on the back of the TC’s success MG went from strength to strength with models such as the MGA and MGB, with the TC finding a new way of life as an amateur racing car. 40 years on the TC is still being handed down through generations and raced today. With a growing number of TC car clubs around the world the passion and appreciation for this car is as strong as ever and it celebrates its 70th birthday this year, making it our car of the month. |
