Jaguar Enthusiasts Club End of Season Awards Dinner 17th November 2006

Report by John Roberts

Quite a night–Full of Surprise Awards & some Notable Guests

I thought I would write one extra editorial this year, as we had the annual end of season awards dinner. It took place at the Burnham Beeches Hotel and the Tudor Barn Restaurant just down the road.

It was a good thing that I took the Tow Truck instead of the XK as many of the roads leading there, were badly flooded, including motorways.

Anyway, and as you may know, I have been climbing up the leader board this season, whilst having much better reliability from the XK150 during the season. So I finished this year with a 4th in Class in the XK Challenge Championship.

However on this night, I was also surprised to be singled out and mentioned in despatches, that for the second successive year I won the trophy for:

“The Best Turned Out Jaguar XK”

This has never been awarded twice to the same person before, so you can imagine how chuffed I was when Terry Dye our JEC Race Secretary and Llona Stellinga the wife of Bert Stellinga the MD of Vredestein (UK) Ltd, (our XK championship tyre sponsor) were there and his wife presented this beautiful trophy to me and complimented my hard work on bringing the car to every event looking absolutely immaculate.

I did mention however, that I have spent an absolute fortune on “Toothbrushes” keeping those MWS Chrome Wires in pristine condition. That raised a few chortles.

Anyway, keeping the car clean and sparkling does also help the aerodynamics of this “Old Timer”. (I’m talking about the car not me). So I’m not just a Polisher, but a relatively fast Polisher at that!!

So it was a splendid evening spent in quite exalted company such as Norman Dewis, who was the Chief Test Driver for Jaguar in the 50’s and 60’s, Win Percy and Barrie “Whizzo” Williams two fantastic Sports Car Racing Drivers. Barrie was racing and winning at this year’s Goodwood Revival yet again.

Finally, next year the race season starts in April and the full calendar should be published in January. At which point we will put it on the web site.

In the mean time, have a wonderful Christmas and New Year and season’s best wishes to you and your family.

Signing off, again!

John
