Brands Hatch Jaguar XK Challenge 4th June 2006Event Report by John Roberts
Summer was back and, with a vengeance!!
From good old rain-soaked Silverstone, to baking-hot Brands Hatch. On Sunday afternoon the temperature reached 28 Degrees in the shade and that does not bode well for classic Jaguars racing at fever pitch. The main problems were inevitably heating.
So at 10am, our 20 minute qualifier commenced. The temperature outside was already in the 20’s and I came home 4th in Class, which was 2 seconds a lap faster than last year. Problem was that everybody else seems to be faster this year.
The Event was the HSCC (Historic Sports Car Club) Summer Festival, Historic Race Meeting. What a weekend it turned out to be! With classic single seaters such as ‘60’s Brabham’s and Copper-BRM’s to Lolas, Ford GT40’s driven by F1’s Adrian Newey and 70’s McLaren M26’s.
Our race was combined with the BRDC (British Racing Driver’s Club) Historic Sportscars with a grid total of 37 cars. This was going to be a busy race, trying to compete with lightweight Cooper-Monaco’s, Lister Jaguars et al.
You can imagine what the first few corners were like but, everyone acted like gentlemen and there were no major incidents.
BUT, the ambient temperature was up to 28 Degrees and there was an inevitability about attrition rate and, cars started to be parked all around the track from yes, you’ve got it, overheating, electrical failures………
Meanwhile, I was having an excellent dice with my race driver buddy, Chris Keith-Lucas in his flame red (This was also the colour of my face by this time) Jaguar Roadster. We vied for position for 25 minutes, UNTIL yours truly, who was in front and looking like getting 3rd in Class for the event overshot at Druids hairpin attempting to lap a back-marker and ended the race in the “Kitty Litter”. There was also a very bad accident up ahead with a driver rolling his car and the race was stopped, just that little bit too late for me to gain valuable championship points.
We are racing at Croft near Darlington on the 17th and 18th June, again with the HSCC, if you would like to come along. If so, please say hello!!
